Mon., Aug 27 -What is History? In the computer lab, you will learn how to use Black-Board. You will post your comments on the following to BlackBoard's discussion forum.

What do you associate with the word "history"? How do you see history -- positive, negative, interesting, boring, relevant, beside-the-point, accurate, biased? Free-write for five minutes.


You will also do an exercise at the the Smithsonian's You be the Historian Website. Go to computer lab for more instructions.

In the text, Who Built America, read and be prepared to discuss the following pages. Due Wed., August 29.

  • Pages 7-8
  • Pages 58-63 (study the timeline)

Monday is Labor Day -- no computer lab this week

 

But start preparing an answer to the following (which you will post on BlackBoard next week on September 12) -- What clues would a future historian draw on to find out about your household (e.g. occupants, activities, diet, income, economic status, etc.)? Give some examples of what those clues might tell these historians.

In the text, Who Built America, read chapter two, "Servitude, Slavery and the Growth of the Southern Colonies."

In class on Wed., Sept. 5:

  • Quiz on chapter 2.
  • Discussion of chapter 2.
