Thursday, October 7:
Go
to:
http://www.google.com
In the search field enter "Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions." Given the
time that is allotted for this step, find out as much as you can about the
history of the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. Pool and share
information with other students. (If you are a novice using a search engine like
Google, ask students next to you for assistance.)
Step two. Twenty-five Minutes.
Go to:
http://www.library.csi.cuny.edu/dept/americanstudies/lavender/2decs.html
Read the Declaration of Independence and the Declaration of Sentiments and
Resolutions side-by-side. Note the similarities and differences in the two
documents. Why do you think that the framers of the Declaration of Sentiments
borrowed so much from the structure and language of the Declaration of
Independence?
Step three. Thirty-five minutes.
Go to the Discussion Board. Answer the questions in the forum entitled
"Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions."
In a paragraph or two, answer these questions.
Is the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions a repudiation of the Declaration of Independence? Is it a re-affirmation of the Declaration of Independence, expanding its democratic and revolutionary thrust? (Or in certain respects a repudiation and a re-affirmation?) Has your close reading of the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions changed your views about whether or not the Declaration of Independence is a revolutionary and democratic document?
Explain your thinking. Quote, as relevant, from the two declarations.
Next, read the posts of your classmates. Respond – constructively – to at least one post of a classmate.
